Weight Loss Product
Few people have heard of the plant extracts Sphaeranthus indicus and Garcinia mangostana, but that may soon change. A recent double blind placebo-controlled study published in The FASEB Journal and presented at Experimental Biology 2011 revealed impressive results of these two extracts on weight loss.
The study involved 60 obese individuals. One group received the two extracts in the proprietary weight loss product called Merastin, and the other group received a placebo. The study was 8 weeks long. Each group consumed 2,000 calories and day and walked 30 minutes 5 days a week.
The treated group received 400 mg of Merastin twice a day. At the end of the study significant reductions were seen in body weight, body-mass index (BMI), and waist and hip circumferences in the Merastin treated group.
There were no major adverse reactions in the Merastin supplemented group.
Tale of the Tape
After 8 weeks individuals taking Merastin lost 11.4 pounds, 3.7 times greater than the placebo group. The Merastin group also lost 4.05 inches in the abdomen, 2 times greater than the placebo group. And, there was a reduction in BMI of 2.05, a decrease that was 3.9 times greater than the placebo group.
Cholesterol and Triglycerides
But, wait there’s more. Reductions in total cholesterol, LDL/HDL ratio, triglycerides, and glucose were also seen in the Merastin supplemented group with the reductions in total cholesterol and triglycerides being statistically significant.
Based on other studies, the combination of S. indicus and G. mangostana appears to modulate several pathways involved in the formation and breakdown of fat cells. Studies show that these extracts enhance fat burning by as much as 56% and in the case of S. indicus fat storage was inhibited by 65%.
